I asked ChatGPT to recommend an SEO tool. 1,200 times.

Quick story.

I asked ChatGPT "what's the best SEO tool?" and a bunch of similar questions, about 1,200 times. Same prompts, same model.

Here's what came back:

Ahrefs and Semrush show up in basically every answer. Both score above 88/100 on overall AI Visibility. So far, no surprise.

Moz is where it gets interesting. ChatGPT knows exactly what Moz is, 87/100 on Latent Brand Association, almost as high as Ahrefs. But its Authority score (how often it
actually gets recommended in category questions) is 39. The model knows Moz. It just won't recommend Moz.

Mangools is even stranger: 75 on LBA, 7 on Authority. Clear association, never picked.

I did this for 10,128 brands across 459 industries. SEO tools, CRMs, mattresses, airlines, smartphones, the works. Over 600,000 ChatGPT responses. Every brand is scored on
three metrics:

- Latent Brand Association, what ChatGPT "believes" about you, before it touches the web
- LLM Authority, how often it recommends you in category answers
- Top of Mind, whether you come up at all on high-volume discovery questions, with no web search allowed

A few findings that surprised me:

- Spotify in Radio Streaming Platforms. LBA of 95. Spotify literally sells "Radio" as a feature inside the app. Authority score:?10. The model has decided Spotify is a music
streaming brand, not a radio brand, and won't surface it when users ask about radio. It picks TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and SiriusXM instead.
- HubSpot tops Latent Brand Association in Email Marketing with 92, the highest in the category. But its Authority score is just?26. ChatGPT knows HubSpot does email. It just
won't recommend them for it. Meanwhile in CRM Software, where HubSpot's training-data presence is much heavier, the model recommends them with an Authority score of?100.
- HelloTalk, a language-exchange app you've maybe never heard of, has the highest possible Top of Mind score in the entire dataset. Higher than Apple, Google, or Microsoft.
It's just baked into the model's training.
- Across the whole dataset, the median Authority score is in the single digits. Most brands are functionally invisible inside ChatGPT, even ones that rank fine on Google.
